Room Hill Circuit, Exford

Map reference  SS  854383

Time –  2 hours 20 minutes

Distance –  7.2 km/ 4.5 miles miles as described, various variations possible from OS Explorer map OL9

Terraine – Moderate, One  Steep Climb, can be muddy in wet weather

 This walk starts from our Barn conversion, Spindrift Barn at Exford, but if you wish to start from the main carpark in Exford, map reference SS 854383 , then you must take the gate into the field at the far end of the car park and walk along the footpath with the River Exe on your right until you reach a kissing gate onto a farm track where you turn Right, over the foot bridge to Court farm holiday complex and straight on to the T junction. Turn Left here signposted Room Hill, and continue on the route.

  • Wonderful views out to Dunkery Beacon
  • Easy detour to the ironage hill fort of Roadcastle
  • Infinitely variable to suit your group
  • Pasture and moorland
  • Walk through one of the oldest farmyards on Exmoor…..totally unspoilt.

Dulverton Circular

Map reference  SS 914283

Time –  1 hour 20 minutes (without breaks!)

Distance –  3.4 miles, 5.46 km as described

Terraine – Easy to moderate, 1 steady climb out of Dulverton, 155 m total ascent.

This walk starts from our cottage on the Northmoor Road, Buchan Cottage, but if you are staying in our barn in Exford or elsewhere, it is easier to park at Marsh Bridge, map ref SS907290, marked as P on OS OL 9 map.

  • All Saints Church, Dulverton – large c1500 church extensively rebuilt in 1855 in Perpendicular style. Noteable modern Oak rood screen, in traditional style.
  • Marsh Bridge listed Grade 11, two of the original four arches were demolished in 1866 and later replaced with the ornate painted steel section in 1979.
  • Cute adjacent packhorse bridge over a gully, the low parapet allowing ponies’ panniers to overhang.
  • Relatively good footing and sheltered in rough weather
  • Follow in the footsteps of the Drovers of old.
  • Plenty of choice for refreshments and shopping in Dulverton.

Webbers Post

Map reference  SS 903439

This beautiful, varied walk can be enjoyed in all weathers. The large carpark is easy to find with plenty of parking and is marked on Map OL 9 with P in a blue box and the blue  “fan” symbol for a viewpoint , map reference as above.

Time –  1 hour as described, limitless variations

Distance – 2.5 miles, 4km as described

Terraine moderate/ easy

  • One of the easiest walks to navigate, using our guide
  • Relatively good footing and sheltered in rough weather
  • Try a stretch of The Coleridge Way
  •  Picnic at “Chapel Cross” and enjoy the views to Selworthy Church
  • Easily varied route to take in Horner Village for tea
  • Easily varied to take in Luccombe church and village
  • Double your distance and head for the open moor and Dunkery Hill for the views.
